Un chercheur, aussi savant qu’infatigable, M. L’Abbé Casanova, vient de démontrer, documents en mains, que le célèbre navigateur est né à Calvi, une charmante petite ville fièrement campée au nord-ouest de la Corse, sur les bords de la Méditérannée.
L’île toute entière, comme on le pense bien, s’est émue de cette découverte si flatteuse pour l’amour-propre national, et la nouvelle s’est rapidement répandue dans les pays intéressés : la France, L’Espagne, L’Italie et l’Amérique.
Aujourd’hui les habitants de Calvi se proposent d’organiser des fêtes en l’honneur du vaillant enfant de la Corse qui, par la puissance de ses calculs, inventa (sic) le Nouveau-Monde et le découvrit par sa confiance inébranlable de son génie.
Il a été décidé que le 23 mai prochain une plaque commémorative serait placée solennellement sur la maison où est né Christophe Colomb et que le même jour une souscription internationale serait ouverte pour lui élever un monument digne de lui dans sa ville natale.
Ajoutons que le président de la République autorise la ville de Calvi, patrie de Christophe Colomb, à célébrer, en 1892, le quatrième centenaire de la découverte de l’Amérique, et que S. S. Léon XIII a adressé ses félicitations à M. l’abbé Casanova pour le travail colossal qu’il a su mener à bonne fin par vingt années d’études et de persévérance.
